Homemade Baby Food Recipe: Rice Cereal

Rice cereal is Gab’s first food. It is recommended by our pedia: Doctor’s Advice in Introducing Solid Food for Baby. We decided to make homemade baby cereal with brown rice.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup rice powder (ground brown rice in blender or food processor)
1 cup water

Directions:

1. Bring water to boil in saucepan. Add the rice powder while stirring constantly.
2. Simmer for 10 minutes, whisking constantly.
3. Serve warm. Mix in formula or breast milk as desired.

Rice cereal can also be made from whole rice. After cooking the rice, you can just puree as needed.

In choosing the type of rice to use, organic is preferred as it is more nutritious. Also, Short-grain cooks up more soft than long or medium grain rice.

Homemade baby cereal may be stored in the refrigerator or freezer to a maximum of 72 hours. We noticed however that thawed cereal becomes rubbery. What worked for us is grinding and storing uncooked rice and only cook for 2 day’s worth.
