Ipad App Review: Baby Sign and Learn

We want Gab to learn sign language.  It’s the best way to communicate with babies before they can speak.  Quennie has a good vocabulary of American Sign Language (ASL).  I also learned from her and by trying to follow the deaf ministry at church when they sing the songs.  At least we know the basics to start with.  The Baby Sign and Learn for iPad is a good reference to reinforce what we know already.

Baby Sign and Learn for iPad can be downloaded for free.  But the free version has very few words only.  To get about 90 more words, you need to make an in app purchase for 1.99 USD.  In the in app purchase, you have the option to choose ASL or Auslan (Australian Sign Language).

Baby Sign and Learn shows the signs through a videe animation.  Animated babies shows you the sign and say it at the same time.  This is a better approach than just a picture and an instruction on how to do the sign.  The animation and the voice makes it easier to follow the sign and to know that you are doing it right.  The babies in the animation looks cute too.

The app comes with flash cards.  This is good for reviewing the signs.  The flash cards are double-sided.  One side shows the word.  The other side gives the instruction on how to make the sign.  If you click the TV button above, it lets you view the video animation of that sign.  This is a very good interface.

The quiz mode adds a little fun to the app.  It’s a 5-question quiz from a random selection of the signs.  In In quiz mode, you are shown the video animation of the sign and choose the correct answer from the 4 choices below it.  Very easy.

Baby Sign and Learn only comes with about 90 signs.  Compared to other apps, this is quite a few words only.  Others gives you 200 words to learn.  But Baby Sign and Learn shows the important ones that you need to communicate with your baby.  Basic signs for sleep, eat, more, please, finish, bath and more are included.  Besides, learning 200 words can be overwhelming.  By the time the baby learns half of it, the baby might be ready to talk.

Overall, this is a very useful app for parents who want to teach their babies sign language.  The interface is user-friendly and the video animations makes learning sign language easy.
