Food Art – Caterpillar Rolls

I think I nailed this one compared to the rocket. Gab found them cute and ate a lot of the egg rolls that make up this caterpillar food art.

This is the first time I used nori or Japanese seaweed paper. I used the nori to make the eyes and mouth of the caterpillar. Since they are small, the nori flavor was not overpowering. Now that Gab can eat small amout of nori, I have more “tools” for the next food art.

Food Art - Caterpillar

Nori is rich in Vitamin A and C. It has zero fat and zero cholesterol. This is great for healthy snacks.

Here’s what is on Gab’s plate.

Food Art - Caterpillar Notes

1. Watermelon – I used a zigzag plastic cutter to make the zigzag edges.

2. Pears – Gab generally loves fruits.

3. Caterpillar Antenna – This is made out of corn kernel and a small carrot stick.

4. Caterpillar Face – These are made of rolled scrambled egg. After rolling the scrambled egg, I cut them sideways to make the circles. The tighter the roll, the better. You can stick a toothpick to keep them in place. But pressing them side to side does the trick here to keep the scrambled eggs from unrolling.

I used a one-hole puncher to make the eyes out of the nori.

5. Caterpillar Body – I used the same rolled scrambled eggs here. Then I placed sliced carrots on top.

6. Caterpillar Feet – These are simply several kernel corns placed below the egg rolls. Gab loves them and asked for more.

Food Art - Gab and Caterpillar

Gab really loves the caterpillar.  He finished off 3 of the egg rolls and all of the fruits and corns.  Every time he eats with gusto, it inspires me more to prepare his food.

This egg roll trick looks promising.  I think I can make several other ideas from this one.
