Book Review: Bright from the Start by Dr. Jill Stamm

This is the second book I read on raising smarter kids.  Bright From the Start by Dr. Jill Stamm started out a bit boring but ended with a lot of practical tips in helping your kids grow up smarter.

I already read the book Brain Rules for Babies by Dr. John Medina.  That is why when Dr. Jill Stamm gave an introduction on her book which included the story of her two daughters, I found it long and boring.  I can’t wait to get to the details of the book.

Bright from the Start

There were a lot of similarities between Brain Rules for Babies and Bright from the Start.  It made me wonder why I bought two books on the same subject.  Anyway, it did reinforce the best practices in raising smart kids.  Here are two experts saying the same things.  It just means they must be giving the right advice.

Dr. Jill organized book in a very easy to read format.  It divides the book into three sections: A-B-C.  A is for Attention.  B is for Bonding.  C is for Communication.  The first chapters of each section discusses why these A-B-Cs are important.  The last chapters will end with tips for parent.

The best part of the book is on the practical tips.  Several chapters ended with activities that involves the parents for babies to develop healthy brains.  It even groups them into the appropriate age when to apply these activities.  The activities for a 3 month baby is different for the 6 month baby.  Although some can be used all the way until age three.

The activities comes with explanation on how they can help make your babies smarter.  Even a simple peek-a-boo game can develop a smart kid.  This book will tell you why.

Dr. Jill writes in a direct manner with the facts and research data presented in layman terms.  It can be overwhelming.  That is why I would sometimes skip a topic.

Overall, the book is worth it for its practical advice and the suggested activities that were given.  It was well organized that I can easily locate the chapters I needed to reread if I want to refresh myself.  Dr. Jill Stamm also gives a lot of emphasis on the involvement of the parents and these activities that she suggests will keep the family busy with the baby.
