Gab and the Disposable Diaper vs Reusable Diaper War

Disposable diapers shoots up our grocery bills. Not to mention, they are not environmentally friendly since they fill up a lot of landfill space and degrades very slowly.  So we recently ordered reusable cloth diapers.  But other say these are not environment-friendly as well.  Oh…

Gab started on Drypers from the hospital.  We sticked to it since.  Later, Quennie bought Chino Pino cloth diapers for Gab.  Chino Pino is similar to a lampin except that they are already shaped into a diaper.  Unfortunately, Gab outgrew them already and we had to find replacements.  They don’t have bigger sizes.

We ordered the cloth diapers thru Amazon.  We got the Kushies Reusable Diaper and Thirsties Duo Wrap Snap.  We also considered the Fuzzibunz but found them a little more expensive.

But there is a debate if reusable cloth diapers are really better for the environment.  Recent research shows that reusable diapers consume 4 times more water produce more sewage waste.  It also uses 2 times more energy.

We still are going for reusable cloth diapers.  What we liked about the cloth diapers are these:

  • They are more gentle on Gab’s skin.  No rashes.  A very important factor in choosing the diaper.
  • They save us on grocery bills.  Reusable cloth diapers are cheaper in the long run.
  • They are adjustable.  They can be loosened or tightened as Gab grows bigger.
  • More colorful.  Some brands have attractive designs and colors.

The cloth diapers will arrive next month.  We’re excited to let Gab try them on.

But still, I wont change the diapers. 😀

  1. We’ve been using cloth diapers ever since – well, we do mix coz when we need to be away from home for a long time, we opt for disposable diapers . more for convenience. But I do believe that with the other “probably” downside of disposable diapers, it is still far better than disposable diapers that sits in the landfill and takes thousands of years to decompose. Not to mention the chemicals used for making these diapers. Water is a semi-reusable resource so with smart way of washing the cloth diapers, we don’t necessary contribute to “wasting of water” 🙂

Two thumbs up for you and Que for going to the cloth diaper way 😉

I also wrote an article about choosing cloth diapers for Tala.
