Google Maps Leads Us to a Raging River

We followed Google Maps to get directions going to Avilon Zoo. With a good internet signal on the road, it was able to provide an easy to follow map going to Avilon Zoo.

I used Google Maps through my mobile phone to navigate. It provided real time directions on where to turn left, where to turn right, how many meters left to the detour and how far longer will the trip be.

I was impressed with the Google Maps that I was already recommending it with the driver and with my friends in the van.

However, less than 1KM from Avilon Zoo, I have found its weakness. We need to cross a river and Google Maps tries to provide the shortest possible distance. And the picture below is where Google Maps told us to drive in order to cross to the other side of the river.

Ok, that sounds too extreme. A man was able to cross this actually, but I don’t think it will be safe to cross with a van especially that we have kids inside.

During a dry season, there is a visible road where you can pass by. But there is an ongoing typhoon in the country. While is no strom signal alert in Montalban, the moonsoon rains were flushed from the mountains into Marikina River. The river covered the concrete road with a strong current.

The driver finds it dangerous to let the van pass. Good thing, there is a bridge just two blocks away. The bridge going to Avilon Zoo is visible in Google Maps too. But still Google Maps insists in taking the “short cut”.

We turned the van around and looked for the other bridg.  We were able to cross the river dry and safe.

It was a funny experience using Google Maps. It goes to show that nobody is perfect! Even Google makes mistakes.
