Daytripper Comic Review

Daytripper is a comic book from Vertigo that asks the question of what is important in a man’s life. Written and drawn by twin brothers Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá, Daytripper is easy to read and invites you to read it again and again to remind us of the little things that makes life worth living.

I grew up reading comics on humor and superheroes. Recently, I discovered a new genre of comics that touches on realism. I first bought Blankets by Craig Thompson and now Daytripper.

Daytripper was originally published in 10-part series by Vertigo in 2010. Daytripper in Trade Paperback (TP) was then released in 2011 and was #1 in the New York Times Paperback Graphic Books chart.  Daytripper Deluxe Edition is now available with a hard cover.

Daytripper Vertigo - Cover

Daytripper tells the story of Bras de Olivias Dominguez.  Each series captures an important part of his life: his birth, his first love, first kiss, his best friend, his first child. In each part, he dies in the end!  Then, he lives again in the next issue only to die again in the end.

It was confusing at first. Why does he end up dead all the time? Which part of his life is true? Which part of the story is part of a dream? As I continue reading, the real story of Bras becomes clearer.

The dying part is like a reminder to us who are reading the comic. It stirs the old question of how will you spend your day if it was the last?

The pages of Daytripper is littered with nuggets of wisdom. Some of them, I captured below. This is just a few of those quotes. One of the quote is quite special as it speaks about fatherhood. I can truly relate to it.

Daytripper is a great comic book.  I love the artwork and the colorful ink of the pages.  Much like the colorful country of Brazil where the story takes place. The story was good. It don’t find the story to be original but it takes the story to a new medium and the result was very beautiful.

Daytripper is available at Fully Booked. You can also check Daytripper at Amazon.com.

Daytripper Quotes

“It doesn’t matter where you’re from – or how you feel… There’s always peace in a strong cup of coffee.”

“Only when you accept that one day you’ll die can you let go, and make the best out of life. And that’s the big secret. That’s the miracle.”

“People die every day. That was the most comforting thought Brás had while all the obituaries he wrote at the newspaper flashed before him. He just realized that, even when he’s not writing about it, people will keep dying. Isn’t it funny how easily forget about work the moment they leave for the day? Isn’t it strange how we always seem to remember the trivial things from our daily lives, yet we so often forget the most important ones.”

“I can’t really tell how old I am, only that I’m too young to wonder if I asked the right questions in the past, and too old to wish the future will bring me all the answers.”

“The young open the paper to forget about life by reading the funny strips. The old do it to forget about death by reading other people’s obits. My advice: don’t open the paper and go on with your life.”
